"Toys Go To War" Exhibition
November 01, 2013, 10:00 AM
February 07, 2014, 7:00 PM
The Silent Wings Museum is excited to present its new exhibition Toys Go To War, as part of The Joy of Play, the seasonal collaborative exhibitions with the Museum of Texas Tech University. The Joy of Play features toys from before, during and after World War II. The Toys Go To War exhibition at the Silent Wings Museum displays and interprets military toys from just before WWII, throughout the war and just after the war. The thematic exhibition illustrates how toys, or the lack of toys, were a part of the overall war effort. The exhibition will be on display November 1, 2013 through February 7, 2014.
"Toys Go To War" by Jack Matthews
During WWII the American economy was altered dramatically to address the needs of the American military, as well those of our allies. Every economic and social institution in the nation was regulated with the goal of focusing the entire potential of the US economy on the production of war materials. The production, and the enjoyment, of toys changed during the war, just as all aspects of the economy changed. The Toys Go To War title and the exhibition's theme was inspired by the book, “Toys Go to War: World War II Military Toys, Games, Puzzles, & Books” by Jack Matthews.
