Fire Marshal
The Fire Marshal's Office of Lubbock Fire Rescue is directed by Fire Marshal, Garett Nelson. Garett has been with Lubbock Fire Rescue since 1988 and has been in the Fire Marshal's Office since 1996.
Fire Inspections, Fire Code Compliance, Fire Investigations and Public Education are the primary areas of responsibility of the Fire Marshal's Office. Fire Inspections and Fire Code Compliance activities are performed to ensure that businesses operating within the city are fire safe. Fire companies inspect existing business every year as part of the Fire Safety Survey program. Inspections of new construction and more technical existing buildings are performed by Fire Inspectors in the Fire Prevention Division who are certified by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection. Although fire company officers are trained in fire origin and cause determination, members of the Fire Prevention Division are certified to conduct more complex fire investigations. This includes collecting evidence, making arrests, filing charges and making courtroom testimony when crimes have been committed. The Public Education program was designed to educate the citizens of Lubbock about the importance of fire safety. Programs include the Fire Safety House, Fire Extinguisher Trainer and the Fire Pals.
