Police Academy

Immediately after being hired, the recruit will attend the Police Academy for a minimum of 24 weeks. The training hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. There is some nighttime training and the classroom hours may vary. The training is mentally and physically demanding. Classroom training includes such areas as criminal justice, criminal investigation, basic law, police procedures, and traffic control. Recruits are trained in proficiency areas of firearms, defensive tactics, and physical training. Successful completion of the academy requires passing the state peace officer licensing exam.

After successful completion of the Police Academy and State Licensing exam, the Police Recruits go on shift assignments throughout the city during the Field Training Officer program.

Police Recruits not already licensed as peace officers in the State of Texas, will attain full-fledged Civil Service status after 18 months of probationary service from their date of hire. Recruits entering the Lubbock Police Academy as a licensed peace officer in the State of Texas, will attain full-fledged Civil Service status after 12 months of probationary service from their date of hire.

Field Training Officer Program

After Academy graduation, Officers are assigned to a Patrol shift and enter the fifteen (15) week Field Training Officer Program. Officers ride with training officers and are extensively evaluated on their ability to apply Academy training to on-duty service. After successfully completing this program, officers are assigned to any of three Patrol shifts.

Patrol shifts for the Lubbock Police Department include four 12 hour shifts and are as follows:

Days Alpha-work Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and every other Sunday 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM
Days Bravo-work Thursday, Friday and Saturday and every other Sunday 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM
Nights Alpha- Work Sunday, Monday Tuesday and every other Wednesday 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM
Nights Bravo- work Thursday, Friday, Saturday and every other Wednesday 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM
